💰 Cale Makar Made NHL History

Plus today's best betting spots and a lopsided EPL matchup

Cale Makar just became the highest paid player in NHL history. Colorado locked up their superstar defenseman with an eight year extension worth 163.2 million dollars, carrying an average annual value of 20.4 million, the first time any player has crossed that threshold. The deal came together just ahead of a new CBA rule that will shorten maximum contract lengths, meaning Colorado secured the full eight year term while it was still available. Makar is now under contract through the 2034-35 season.

The price tag might be expensive, but it makes sense. He's one of just three defensemen in league history to average better than a point per game for his career, alongside Bobby Orr and Paul Coffey. He reached 500 career points faster than every blueliner not named Orr, Coffey, or Denis Potvin. His trophy case already includes a Stanley Cup, a Conn Smythe as playoff MVP, two Norris Trophies, and a Calder Trophy as top rookie, putting him in an exclusive club with only Orr and Nicklas Lidstrom.

Perhaps the clearest evidence of his value came this spring. Colorado entered the playoffs as the top overall seed, but with Makar sidelined and then playing hurt, the team was swept in the conference finals. When healthy, Colorado has outscored opponents by 63 goals with him on the ice over the past three seasons.

With the league's salary cap climbing and other top young players already commanding similar money, Colorado didn't really have a choice. There is no available replacement anywhere close to his level, and locking him alongside defensive partner Devon Toews keeps the roster's competitive window open for years. This wasn't an overpay. It was the cost of keeping the best defenseman in hockey right where he belongs.

⚾️ Target the Longball in These MLB Matchups

The equation for today is to find susceptible pitching staffs against hot batting lineups in run-scoring ballparks.

🔥 Orioles at Rockies Over 10.5

Colorado plays in the most run friendly ballpark, one that inflates both hits and home runs well above league average. That environment would be dangerous enough on its own, but the Colorado pitching staff is dead last in baseball with a 5.52 ERA (30th), a 1.52 WHIP (30th), and a 1.40 HR/9 (28th) while surrendering 186 home runs (27th).

Baltimore comes to Denver with a 103 wRC+ offense that ranks 8th in the category, with 165 homers of their own, and even Colorado's own offense scores at a respectable clip thanks largely to the altitude. When the worst run prevention unit in baseball hosts a game at elevation, the total barely needs help to clear.

🔥 Marlins at Nationals Over 8.5

Washington's offense is the centerpiece here, ranking near the top of the league in runs scored and home runs while playing in a park that also favors the long ball with a 105 HR factor. Miami's rotation has been decent, but their bullpen has been one of the worst in baseball since midseason, and Marlins starter Ryan Gusto owns a career .310 BA against current Nationals hitters.

Washington's own pitching staff hasn't been stingy either, featuring a 4.68 ERA (27th), 1.39 WHIP (26th), and 1.39 HR/9 (27th) with 189 homers allowed. Miami should find ways to add runs of their own with a .724 team OPS.

🔥 White Sox at Astros Over 8.5

Houston's ballpark ranks among the better home run environments in the league with a 113 HR factor, and the Astros are bottom of the barrel in all pitching categories with a 4.66 ERA (25th), a 1.36 WHIP (24th), and a 1.32 HR/9 (26th) while allowing 177 home runs (26th).

The White Sox and Astros each rank inside the top six in scoring with the White Sox 4th in home runs (180). Two well rounded, power hitting offenses facing shaky starters in a juiced park is exactly the setup we want.

⚽️ Reigning EPL Champions Continue to Dominate

The reigning Premier League champions take a trip to Villa Park today against a Villa side that barely resembles the one that finished fourth and won a European trophy last season. Arsenal arrive having barely touched their core roster, adding even more quality in Christos Tzolis and Bruno Guimaraes while keeping every key piece from their title winning campaign intact. Arsenal have so much talent that they’re begging for larger roster sizes.

Aston Villa have been stripped down. Morgan Rogers left for a British transfer record fee, Youri Tielemans and Donyell Malen are gone, Ezri Konsa now plays for the very club Villa are about to face, and Emi Martinez has departed for Chelsea. Ollie Watkins wasn't even included in the opening matchday squad amid reports of a move to Saudi Arabia.

The result of roster turnover showed immediately, as Villa were routed 4-0 at Brighton and had a new signing sent off before the break. Injuries and suspensions could leave them missing as many as six regular contributors. Arsenal opened with a comfortable 3-0 win over newly promoted Coventry, looking composed and in control throughout.

Despite the lopsided form and roster turnover, history offers Villa a sliver of hope. This venue has given Arsenal fits in recent years, with the Gunners managing just one win in their last three visits. Villa manager Unai Emery has also built a reputation as a difficult matchup for his former club.

🔥 Arsenal FC to Cover -1.5 Spread

The quality gap here looks too wide to ignore. Arsenal enter with continuity, depth, and momentum, while Villa are still piecing together a new look roster after a chaotic summer of departures. Expect the champions to control this one from start to finish, even if Villa Park has occasionally been an uncomfortable venue for them in the past.
