With Caleb Williams sidelined by a right hamstring injury, the Bears are expected to start 38 year old Case Keenum at quarterback tonight.

Keenum is 38 years old with 66 career starts and a 30-36 record. His career stat line is 62.3% completions, 6.8 yards per attempt, 79 touchdowns, 51 interceptions, and an 84.6 rating. Functional, but never special. His last real run came in 2019 with Washington, opening with a career high 380 yards, against the Eagles.

It’s hard to talk about Keenum without mentioning his college stats. At the University of Houston, he set NCAA records for passing yards (19,217), touchdowns (155), and completions, and he remains the only FBS quarterback to top 5,000 yards in three separate seasons. He is also the only one to reach over 20,000 total career yards of offense. He’s basically the Christian Laettner of college football, and like Christian, his pro career never did live up to the expectations.

His NFL peak came in 2017. In Minnesota, he went 11-3 with 22 touchdowns, 7 picks, and a 98.3 rating, then hit Stefon Diggs for the 61 yard game winner known as the Minneapolis Miracle. A year later in Denver, he threw for a career high 3,890 yards but also 15 interceptions in a 6-10 season. He made 8 starts in Washington in 2019 and since then he's made four starts in six seasons, lost 2024 to a Lisfranc injury, and didn't play last year in Chicago.

Keenum insists he's ready, crediting an offseason built around diet and fueling. "I feel really good," he said. The books aren't as convinced. Philadelphia sits between -190 and -220 on the moneyline, with 65% of the sharp money backing the Eagles.

🏈 Expect a Turbulent MNF Matchup in Chicago

The best offense in football by DVOA is a home underdog Monday night, and one name explains why. With Caleb Williams out with a hamstring injury, Chicago is expected to turn to Case Keenum.

The Bears rank first in offensive DVOA and seventh overall, scoring 31 points per game while leading the league in rushing yards (212.5 per game), yards per carry (6.07), and rushing touchdowns (6). The passing game is the weak link, with just two touchdown throws. The defense is a paradox, ranking second in pressure rate but 30th in yards per play allowed and 31st in yards per catch allowed.

Philadelphia is 2-0 but just 16th in total DVOA. Vic Fangio's defense ranks fifth against the pass but 24th against the run, with only one sack and zero interceptions. The offense converts 53% of third downs (fourth), yet a reshuffled line has allowed a 9.68% sack rate (24th). Chicago also averages 10 penalties per game to Philly's 4.5.

In his last two starts, for Houston in 2023, Keenum threw three picks against one touchdown with a 61.1 rating. Philly hasn't intercepted anyone yet, but it picked off at least one pass in 11 of 17 games last season. Nearly three years of rust plus obvious passing downs is a risky mix Keenum, and the Eagles are due for a pick.

Williams' 107 rushing yards and two scores need a new home, and Swift is first in line. D’Andre Swift is averaging 116.5 yards per game and has cleared this number in 6 of his last 10 games. He topped 100 rushing yards against Philly last November, finishing with a combined total of 138 against them.

With Dallas Goedert and Hollywood Brown out and DeVonta Smith nursing a hamstring (but still active), Ertz steps in at 35 years old for his season debut. He's cleared this line in 9 of his last 10 games, last year with Washington, including a 6 catch game for 43 yards against the Bears. Facing a defense allowing 9.1 yards per attempt and a pass rush that should force quick throws, one moderate gain just about does it.

Pitching decides this one. New York owns baseball's best ERA (3.20) and Boston ranks third (3.55), with just 14 runs separating their full season run prevention. The lineups are opposites. The Yankees were 2nd in MLB with 223 homers while hitting .234, 27th in the league, while Boston wins with contact. The catch: Aaron Judge has played only seven games since May, and Aaron Boone is planning without him. Boston has won 6 of the last 10 meetings despite being outscored.

⚾️ White Sox at Astros

By record, Houston is the worst division winner in history, and the pitching staff is why: 24th in ERA, 29th in walk rate. Chicago's lineup ranks fifth in runs and fourth in wRC+, but Munetaka Murakami (.154) and Colson Montgomery (.158) have cratered since Aug. 1. Houston took the season series 5-2, and Yordan Alvarez is the bat Chicago needs to watch out for.

⚾️ Phillies at Braves

Philly leads baseball in K/9, but the Phillies’ bullpen owns the majors' worst ERA since Sept. 1 (5.79), and a late skid forced Zack Wheeler into Game 162, leaving the rotation short on rest. Meanwhile, Atlanta is rested, will start Chris Sale for Game 1, and rides Ronald Acuña Jr. off a seven homer September. The Braves won the season series 9-4, but Philly has won all three prior postseason meetings. The Braves are worth backing as narrow favorites at home.

⚾️ Cubs at Padres

Chicago leads MLB in runs, OPS, and wRC+ but ranks 25th in FIP and 29th in HR/9. San Diego has the league's best bullpen and has gone 41-18 since July 24, the best in the league. Pete Crow-Armstrong (45 homers, 41 steals) looks like a lock for NL MVP, yet the Cubs managed just 15 runs in their final six games. Chicago took five of six this season, but Fernando Tatis Jr. and his 1.114 career postseason OPS looms large.
