Gianni Infantino killed his own World Cup private equity plan, but the sudden retreat may have come too late to save him.

The proposal, developed quietly behind closed doors, would have carved FIFA's commercial operations, including both World Cups, into a subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise valued at $20 billion. Roughly $4 billion would have come from selling a minority stake to outside investors, with a group led by a US political family reportedly out front. To get it approved, Infantino allegedly dangled $40 million to each of the 211 member associations, plus another $20 million available if they signed on by September 19. He was also reportedly positioned to become commissioner of the new entity at a modest salary of $64 million annually.

The reaction was brutal, and appropriate. UEFA threatened a unanimous boycott and declared the sport is not for sale. Wales became the first nation to formally pull its support, the English FA is drafting a letter doing the same, and CONCACAF and the AFC both demanded governance reviews. Senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned, calling the deal a mortgage on football's future. Chief operating officer Kevin Lamour told the Associated Press that FIFA's own administration had been deceived and described it as one man's project.

Here is where things get interesting. Assuming Infantino does not resign and tries to ride out the backlash, he would be up for reelection in 2027. It’s possible that he won’t make it that long if member nations band together and vote him out in a special session.

An Extraordinary Congress requires 43 associations to file a written request to be assembled, and none has been filed yet. UEFA alone has 55 members and could trigger it tomorrow, but that is only the first hurdle as removing Infantino would take 106 votes. UEFA and CONCACAF are the most opposed, but combined they control just 90 votes. Africa is fully behind him, CONMEBOL is expected to follow, and Asia has declined to break ranks, with Kuwait, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and Lebanon voicing confidence.

No matter what, the process takes time. That time gives Infantino the chance to seek forgiveness by any means necessary. Watch what he does with FIFA's $5 billion in idle reserves. Redirecting that money through the existing Forward program is his cleanest path to holding onto the allegiance of smaller federations through the next election. Then he’ll feel safe. Blatter looked safe in 2015 too, right up until he wasn't.

⚾️ MLB Trade Deadline Closes Tonight

The 6 p.m. deadline is quickly approaching and the league picture continues to dramatically change.

Luis Arraez is the top bat still available, hitting .324/.360/.440 this season. Tampa Bay is the favorite to land him, though the Yankees and Phillies are also circling. It’s worth remembering that hitters removed from a seller's lineup often cool off, the Eugenio Suárez pattern from last year.

Clay Holmes is fully cleared from the fractured fibula that wiped out his season, he threw 73 pitches Sunday in a third rehab start and posted a 2.39 ERA before the injury. Clubs that missed on Skubal, Peralta, and Gausman will be giving him a call. Hunter Greene sits at roughly even odds to move, with control through 2029 and a 2.76 ERA, 0.94 WHIP season behind him, though only four starts since an elbow issue.

The Angels, at 43-69, scratched José Soriano on Saturday, which usually means something. Reid Detmers and Zach Neto, who leads the AL with 73 runs, could follow. Texas is the other story after being swept by Houston, with Corey Seager's $155 million commitment through 2031 and looming 10-and-5 rights forcing a tough decision.

Now to today's board.

Coors Field headlines the slate with a park grade of 113 overall with a 128 runs factor and a 117 hits mark. Michael Lorenzen has been carved up by this Rays roster to the tune of .308 with a .692 slugging figure across 45 career at-bats. Junior Caminero owns two homers in six at bats against him, Cedric Hemant Mullins one in five. Ian Seymour brings no history against Colorado, which cuts both ways, but at altitude that lean favors the bats. The total sits at 11.5 and I expect the score to fly past that.

Philadelphia is second on the list today at a line of 9.5. Aaron Nola has allowed 73 runs across 22 starts with a 5.61 ERA and 26 home runs, second most in baseball and on pace for the most in a single season of his career. Citizens Bank carries a 115 home run factor. Washington has not named a starter yet, and could send out Trevor Williams who hasn’t started on the mound since last season.

Houston is the most one-sided play. Shane Bieber has surrendered a .408 average and .711 slugging mark to the current Astros lineup over 78 plate appearances, with Yordan Alvarez at .571 and Jose Altuve at .500. Cristian Javier has smothered Toronto historically, so the runs likely come from Houston, over 4.5 total team runs.

At home he has hit the over in 68% of his last 25 games. He already has a hit off Bieber in his 3 prior at-bats, and hitting near the top of the order guarantees him the plate appearances to pile up counting stats.

🔥 Junior Caminero Player Prop

Michael Lorenzen has been battered all year, sitting at a 6.54 ERA with a 1.81 WHIP through 22 starts while surrendering a .331 average. Sixteen home runs have left the yard against him, twelve of them off left handed bats, and now he pitches in the most favorable hitting environment in the sport, a 113 overall park factor with a 128 runs mark.

Caminero has been a specific problem for him, going three for six with two of those hits leaving the yard. One swing clears this line by itself. His season average of 2.24 sits near tonight line, and in three career games against Colorado he has averaged 2.67 per game. Tampa Bay has won ten of thirteen and walks into the best offensive setting available.
