⚽ The Best World Cup Stories Aren't on the Field

Waffle House, Bass Pro Shop, and Texas BBQ. Fans are falling in love with America

If you live in Boston, there’s a decent chance you’ve picked up a Scottish accent by now. World Cup visitors have taken over cities all across the country for the last ten days and their experiences with American culture may be the highlight of the tournament so far.

One of the best documented experiences was from a Japanese traveler who tested the Texas barbecue reputation in person. The verdict was highly entertaining. A Swedish fan named Elsa went viral after her first encounter with ranch dressing in Indiana, declaring that Europe needed immediate access. Other documented experiences to go viral have included Waffle House, In-N-Out, Whataburger, and even Taco Bell. I mean, what’s more American than a Crunchwrap Supreme at two in the morning?

Then there are the things no one planned to go viral. Massive American gas stations. Walmart aisles. Oversized pickup trucks that literally wouldn’t be able to navigate the streets of Europe. Norwegian fans took a trip through Bass Pro Shops like it was a theme park.

The things we barely notice, like driving nine hours and still being in the same state, a gas station the size of a shopping mall, or Waffle House at 1 a.m., are legitimately shocking to most of the world. It’s encouraging to be flooded with so many positive experiences when we’re usually inundated with nothing but conflict.

On the field, the opening group stage has been just as compelling. Cape Verde is in the middle of one of the greatest debut runs in tournament history. With draws against Spain and Uruguay, they find themselves in a situation that could extend their World Cup stay if they can grab one more strong result.

Then there is Curaçao, another tiny island nation making their World Cup debut. Curaçao's goalkeeper Eloy Room just set a World Cup record for saves in regulation of a World Cup game at 15 total, backstopping a 0-0 draw against Ecuador. The Dutch royal family were seen dancing in the locker room with the team after the match.

We are still only halfway through the tournament so there are plenty more experiences for fans to document and stories to unfold.

⚽️ Finding Value in Shots on Goal

Argentina's opening win over Algeria featured a Messi hat-trick, but the betting value in this match hides in other parts of the field for this match.

👉️ Alexis Mac Allister 1+ Shot on Target (+155)

Mac Allister had 1 shot on target in the first game of this tournament and logged two attempts against Algeria. His role in Scaloni's system is built around arriving late into the box while Messi and Álvarez pull defensive attention. Austria is likely to sit in a low block, which historically invites more long-range shooting.

With Argentina projected at 1.9 goals, the Austrian keeper will be busy, and Mac Allister at plus odds is a significant discount compared to the juiced prices on Argentina's primary attackers.

👉️ Marko Arnautovic 1+ Shot on Target (+100)

On the Austrian side, Marko Arnautovic at even money is worth a look. In 45 minutes against Jordan he put two shots on target, including a penalty conversion and a goal that VAR wiped out. Austria generated 12 total shots in that game and Arnautovic is their designated focal point when he's on the pitch. If Austria falls behind, he becomes the primary outlet on every counter and set piece.

👉️ Ismaila Sarr 1+ Shot on Target (-115)

Norway dismantled Iraq 4-1 while Senegal needs a result after dropping their opener to France. Both teams bring volume as Norway is averaging 7.5 shots on goal over their last 10 matches, Senegal with 7.0 over their last eight, and the match dynamics should push that number higher.

Ismaila Sarr led Senegal with three attempts against France, a world-class defense by any measure. Against Norway's backline the conversion rate is likely to improve. Norway has only kept one clean sheet in their last eight matches and allows 18.8 opponent attempts per game. Sarr's pace on the right wing will be tough to stop for Norway’s left-back, and with Senegal in near must-win territory, aggressive early shot volume is the tactical expectation. Alongside Mané and Jackson, Sarr will be expected to apply offensive pressure from the opening whistle.

⚾️ Monday Night Strikeout Props

Tonight's 13-game slate has two pitcher props that stand out based on park environment, opposing lineup profiles, and recent form.

Williams has been one of the more reliable strikeout producers on the board this season. Across 15 starts, he's hitting this number at a 67% rate with a season average of 6.87 strikeouts per outing, meaning his floor consistently sits near or above the current line.

The venue suits him. Guaranteed Rate Field carries a park factor of 97, slightly below league average in a way that actually suppresses offense rather than inflating it. The opposing White Sox roster amplifies that edge with persistent contact issues all year, and Williams generates 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

One underrated factor: Cleveland's bullpen has posted a 3.39 ERA since May 1st, which gives Williams the freedom to pitch aggressively deep into counts without needing to protect leads. His ability to generate swings and misses in the middle innings is his calling card.

Rasmussen's recent run is the story here. Over his last five starts, he's averaging 7.8 strikeouts per game and has cleared the 5.5 line in four of them. His last ten starts show a 70% hit rate, and his full-season average across 14 games sits at exactly 6.0 Ks per start with a 64% hit rate.

The dome is a significant structural advantage. Tropicana Field rates only 97 overall as a park factor, and its strikeout-specific factor sits at 102 which is one of the best pitcher-friendly environments for accumulating Ks in the league.

In 39 career plate appearances against these KC hitters, Rasmussen has struck out 30.8% of them. His walk rate against this group is just 2.6%, which keeps pitch counts low and gives him real runway into the middle of games. Specific mismatches include Lane Thomas and Michael Massey, two hitters he's dominated in prior looks. Rasmussen has the profile to exploit that tonight.
